The ascendance of craft beer as a premium beverage to pair with the world’s finest cuisines isn’t just a phenomenon taking place across the U.S., with notable success in Connecticut, home to a burgeoning number of artisan breweries making world-class beers.

Craft beer has also been taking Spain by storm, joining wine on the Iberian Peninsula as a perfect partner for tapas and more. El País reported this summer that between 2008 and 2016 the number of microbreweries in Spain grew by 1,600 percent.

In honor of the craft beer renaissance within Olea’s home culture, we’re celebrating with our first craft beer evening. The restaurant already features craft beers at the bar, including on tap, and on Oct. 21 we’re taking the experience up a notch with a festive evening pairing a special menu of Chef Manuel Romero’s flatbreads with two beers tailored just for us by our neighbors at Thimble Island Brewery in Branford.

And this evening is being presented as a very affordable way of getting to know Olea, or enjoying the restaurant in a different way. Guests will mingle in the bar area—and enjoy a sampler of flatbreads and a pint of craft beer poured from a cask for just $15.

Chef Romero’s flatbreads will include the popular Setas from the Tapas menu, featuring wild mushrooms, along with Solomillo, with beef tenderloin, caramelized onions and barbecue sauce aioli, Cordero, with braised lamb shank, caramelized onions, carrot purée and mint yogurt—and Salmón, with salmon tartar, ginger, sesame seeds, cilantro, Boston lettuce and soy sauce.

The featured beers are Thimble Island’s Ghost Island Double IPA, a bold and complex beer with an intense crispness and a smooth finish, and the Dark Pumpkin Porter, perfect for autumn, with the sweetness of the pumpkin blending perfectly with the roasted malt of the porter.

Reservations for a flatbread sampler and a beer will be accepted, but guests may also simply come anytime between 5 and 10 p.m. and join those already enjoying themselves in the bar, where additional pints of the Thimble Island beers will be available and the full Tapas menu will also be served for those who want to linger and try other small bites.
